- How old do you have to be to take driver’s ed?
At least 14 1/2 years old at the start of class. - What does the teenage Driver’s Education program consist of?
The teenage driver’s ed program consists of 30 hours of classroom plus 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. - How much does it cost?
$525 for the classroom and behind-the-wheel program. Hey, parents: the classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction completion can save you a ton of money on your car insurance! THESE SAVINGS COULD GIVE YOU 10-20% ANNUALLY (depending on your insurance company) - What is the home study course?
It is a flash drive of the 30-hour classroom course and a workbook that you may complete at home. The student will complete the 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel instruction in person with a certified instructor. - Do you give the state-certified driver’s license test?

We do drive tests BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Our Fort Collins testing location is at 1400 Peterson Street, Fort Collins, 80524. Please visit our Drive Test page for more information. - How long do you need a permit before taking the driver’s license test?
Anyone under 18 years of age must hold a permit for 1 FULL year before taking the driver’s license test. Over 18 has no time requirements. See our Drive Testing page for more information. - Can adults learn to drive with Conahan’s?
Yes, Conahan’s provides individualized instruction for adults of all driving skill or experience levels to meet their specific needs, including specialized condition driving (winter, rain, mud, ice). You may take as many or as few hours as you would like to gain confidence. Private Lessons require a 2-hour minimum. - Can I take the Written Permit test with you?
No, only the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles administers this test. This test requires an in-person testing appointment or testing may be done online. Please visit their website (mydmv.colorado.gov) for more details.
State of Colorado Licensing Rules
Drivers in Colorado have different requirements to become licensed based on their ages.
Age 15-15.5
- Student is required to complete a full 30-hour classroom course to get their permit before 15.5.
- Student must complete 50 hours with a parent (40 daytime & 10 nighttime)
- Student must complete 6 hours of certified Behind-the-Wheel instruction.
- Student must hold their permit for ONE FULL YEAR before they will be eligible to get their license.
Age 15.5-16.5
- Student is no longer required to complete a full 30-hour classroom course to get their permit, HOWEVER, this comprehensive instruction will give the new driver the best education AND qualify parents for INSURANCE DISCOUNTS!
- Student must complete a 4 hour course, WE DO NOT OFFER THIS! This 4-hour course will not qualify parents for any insurance discounts. We strongly feel that the full 30-hour course gives students the best possible education.
- Student must complete 50 hours with a parent (40 daytime & 10 nighttime)
- Student must complete 6 hours of certified Behind-the-Wheel instruction.
- Student must hold their permit for ONE FULL YEAR before they will be eligible to get their license.
Age 16.5-18
- Student is no longer required to complete a full 30-hour classroom course to get their permit, HOWEVER, this comprehensive instruction will give the new driver the best education AND INSURANCE DISCOUNTS!
- Student is no longer required to complete 6 hours of certified Behind-the-Wheel instruction; HOWEVER, this invaluable practical training will teach the new driver the best possible habits and qualify parents for INSURANCE DISCOUNTS!
- Student must complete 50 hours with a parent (40 daytime & 10 nighttime)
- Student must hold their permit for ONE FULL YEAR before they will be eligible to get their license.
